The Times asked six painters and illustrators to capture the thrill and flavor of Hollywood’s big day and has printed six Calendar covers to mark the event. Here are the full portfolio and a few words from each of the artists.
JONATHAN BARTLETT
Brooklyn, N.Y.
“I wanted to have a little tongue-in-cheek fun with the most important part of the Oscars; that is, winning. Everyone always thanks a list of people, but what you don’t see is the other side of the page.”
STEFANO MORRI
Rimini, Italy
“I imagined a sparkling moonlight over the sea to suggest the dreamy, magical atmosphere of Oscar’s night.”
PETER FERGUSON
Yotsumatsu, Japan
“I thought it would be kind of funny to have a couple watching the red carpet happenings on
the tube, while it was happening right below their window.”
ROBERT CARTER
Baden, Canada
“I wanted to portray the honor and nobility of the Academy Awards. The actual Oscar statuette received by the winners depicts a knight holding a crusader’s sword. That was my inspiration.”
KENTON NELSON
Pasadena
“Honoring the performing arts, actors, actresses, and the ‘Movieland’ that we
live in.”
OWEN SMITH
Alameda, Calif.
“In a time when young stars are more likely to be seen in jeans and T-shirts, the Academy Awards is the one night to witness a return to vintage Hollywood glamour.”
