The Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela will team up under conductor Gustavo Dudamel to take on the complete cycle of Mahler’s nine completed symphonies in the 2011-12 season at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Also highlighting the season will be the world premiere of a new oratorio, ‘The Gospel According to the Other Mary,’ by composer John Adams (a commission), the Phil’s creative chair; the world premiere of the prologue to ‘Orango,’ an unfinished opera by Shostakovich about a grotesque half-man, half-ape creature; and a semi-staged production of Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni’ designed by architect Frank Gehry.
Guest conductors for the Phil will include Sir Simon Rattle, who appeared at Disney Hall in 2009 conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker (pictured). Click here to read more about how the L.A. Phil put together its season.
A listing of the complete season follows below.
