Angels, Weaver scheduled to go to arbitration Wednesday

The Angels have not ruled out the possibility of signing ace Jered Weaver to a long-term contract, but negotiations for such a deal apparently won’t be completed in time to prevent an arbitration hearing between the right-hander and the club. The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon in Phoenix.

Weaver, who went 13-12 with a 3.01 earned-run average and an American League-leading 233 strikeouts last season, has requested a salary of $8.8 million, more than double the $4.265 million he made in 2010. The Angels have countered with an offer of $7.375 million.

There is still a chance the sides could settle -- the midpoint between the two figures is $8.09 million. If the case does go to a hearing, a decision probably would not be announced until Thursday.
