Pepsico, the giant beverage and snack food company, said its first-quarter profits rose 23% due to strong soft drink sales. The parent company of Pepsi-Cola, Frito-Lay, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell said soft drink earnings surged 20% with domestic growth well above the U.S. industry rate. Sales of Pepsi, Diet Pepsi and lemon-lime Slice increased significantly, but the company said its domestic profits rose only modestly due to costs related to launching new Slice flavors.
