Duarte : Disposal Study Promoted
The Duarte City Council has pledged that, if other sources contribute $45,000, it will supply the additional $5,000 necessary for a feasibility study on a proposal to use railroads to haul trash to the desert for disposal. CMRR Engineering of Vista, which hopes to be involved in developing such a system, estimates it will cost $50,000 to determine how and where the waste would be disposed of, said Jesse Duff, assistant to the city manager. He said CMRR has a preliminary estimate from Santa Fe Railroad of $20 per ton to haul trash from the San Gabriel Valley to an unspecified location in the desert.
Duff said that since Duarte opposes a proposed waste-to-energy plant in Irwindale, the city thinks it should demonstrate its willingness to explore alternative methods of trash disposal.
