Pat Garman hit a grand slam and John Eccles followed with a home run to key an eight-run second inning that led Cal State Fullerton to a 16-4 win over USC in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday night at Titan Field.
The victory was Fullerton’s fifth in its last six outings and snapped USC’s five-game winning streak. Gil Villanueva pitched five innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out four to get his first win since Feb. 23. Villanueva was out six weeks with bone chips in his elbow and was making his second appearence since being sidelined.
Mark Razook hit a solo home run in the third inning and Dann Howitt had a two-run homer in the fourth for the Titans (33-17).
John Reilley was charged with all eight runs in the second inning and took the loss for USC (26-24).
In other college baseball action:
Pepperdine 9, UC Irvine 2--The Waves got only six hits but took advantage of nine walks and a hit batter to break open the nonconference game in Field Stadium at Malibu. Pepperdine (29-17-2) sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth inning and expanded on a 3-2 lead with four runs. Andy Stankiewicz’ RBI double accounted for one run and the other three were forced in on a pair of walks and a hit batter with the bases loaded.
Scott Shockey and Matt Howard had three RBIs each for Pepperdine. Irvine (17-23-2) scored its only runs on a two-run homer by Mike Sugar in the second inning, his third homer of the season.
