Bill Elliott broke his own stock car qualifying record as he won the pole position for Sunday’s Winston 500 at Talladega, Ala., driving his Ford Thunderbird around the 2.66-mile Alabama International Motor Speedway at an average speed of 212.229 m.p.h. He set the old mark of 209.398 here a year ago before winning the race.
