Southern Section Boys’ Volleyball Playoffs : Hanan, Smith Lead Edison Past San Clemente

Danny Hanan, senior middle blocker, had 25 kills Thursday night to lead the Edison High School boys’ volleyball team to a 15-12, 13-15, 16-14, 15-6 win over San Clemente in the first round of the CIF Southern Section 4-A playoffs in the Chargers’ gym.
Rich Smith, senior outside hitter, added 12 kills for top-seeded Edison, which improves to 16-1 and advances to Saturday’s quarterfinals. Greg Prahm had 17 kills for San Clemente, which closed the season at 9-4.
In other 4-A action:
Laguna Beach 3, El Toro 2--Jeff Cummings, a senior middle blocker, had 26 kills and Matt Kessler had 18 kills to lead the No. 4 Artists past the Chargers, 11-15, 15-10, 15-9, 11-15, 15-7.
Dana Hills 3, Inglewood 0--Tim Glasgow had nine kills to lead the Dolphins to a 15-0, 15-0, 15-8 win over the Sentinels at Dana Hills High. The third-seeded Dolphins improved to 15-2.
Woodbridge 3, Harvard 0--The Warriors defeated the Saracens, 15-10, 15-7, 15-11, at Harvard High in North Hollywood to advance to the quarterfinals against Edison.
Newport Harbor 3, Rolling Hills 0--The second-seeded Sailors were challenged in the first game but went on to an easy, 17-15, 15-2, 15-2, win at Newport Harbor High. The Sailors improved to 15-1 and will play Santa Barbara in the quarterfinals.
La Quinta 3, Mira Costa 2--Mike Whitcomb had 15 kills and Eric Zeno and Ronnie Browning each had 12 kills to lead the Aztecs to a come-from-behind win over the Mustangs, 11-15, 8-11, 15-12, 15-10, 16-4, at Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach.
Ryan Nakasone also had 19 digs for La Quinta in the 2 1/2-hour match. The Aztecs, who improved to 11-4, will meet Dana Hills in the quarterfinals.
