BRIEFLY : Gillespie Among Candidates for USC Job

Mike Gillespie, baseball coach at College of the Canyons, is one of the top candidates for the baseball coaching job at USC should Rod Dedeaux step down after this season, it was reported Friday.

Dedeaux, 71, said Friday he is contemplating retirement at the end of this, his 45th season. According to a report by KNBC-TV, Gillespie, Loyola Marymount’s Dave Snow, and Pat Harris, an assistant at Oral Roberts, are the top choices to succeed Dedeaux.

Gillespie, who played on USC’s 1961 national championship team, said he hadn’t been contacted by the school but would “be very interested to find out what that job is like.”

For several years, it has been rumored that Gillespie was among the leading candidates to replace Dedeaux, who has compiled a record of 1,332-566-11 at USC.

Gillespie has coached Canyons to two state championships and 10 conference title in his 16 years at the college in Valencia.
