The Tragedy at Central Library
The fire at the Central Library underscores two facts: First, the incalculable cultural value of the library’s collection, and second, the inadequacy of the library building for housing that collection.
It was like keeping the family jewels in a shoe box.
We have been poor protectors of our heritage. Let us now mitigate our error by restoring the library’s collection to the fullest possible extent, and by creating a far better facility to preserve it.
