Tours of Landmark Wiltern Theater Begin Again Today

Tours of the recently restored Art Deco Wiltern Theater will be given today from 2 to 4 p.m. at Western Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard.
The landmark structure, with its plaster relief work, painted murals and soaring spaces, has not been opened for a public tour since last summer. Those attending the event will receive a free copy of The Wiltern, an illustrated commemorative booklet published in limited edition.
The jewel-like green terra-cotta structure, designed by G. Albert Landsburg, opened originally as a Warner Brothers Theater in 1931, with “first night” attended or witnessed by more than 100,000 fans. Threatened by demolition in 1980, the building was saved through the efforts of the Los Angeles Conservancy and public support; the firm of Ratkovich Bowers Perez Inc. purchased the theater and invested $4.6 million restoring it.
