Boarding Plane in Tijuana

Regarding Mexico travel via Tijuana Airport (Jay Berman, April 13), your readers should know that they may be required to pay additional fares before boarding the plane in Tijuana.
In January we purchased tickets through our travel agent to fly from Tijuana to Merida. For a family of four the cost was $700 round trip, rather than $1,065 that it would have cost to fly from LAX. A substantial saving.
When we arrived at Tijuana Airport in March, however, we were required to pay an additional $223 (in cash) before boarding the plane, since the fare had gone up and domestic fares within Mexico are not guaranteed, according to the Mexicana spokesperson. The saving over a flight out of LAX was thus reduced from $365 to $142, and frankly it wasn’t worth it.
