Bill Donakowski of Berkeley broke away from Thom Hunt of San Diego over the last 1 1/2 miles to win the New Jersey Waterfront Marathon in 2 hours 11 minutes 40 seconds at Jersey City, N.J..
Rita Borralho of Portugal won the women’s division, edging Gail Kingma of Seattle in 2:35:37. Both winners earned $25,000.
