U.S., Israel Sign ‘Star Wars’ Pact

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger and Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin today signed an agreement making Israel the third country whose companies and laboratories can work on the Administration’s “Star Wars” program.
Pentagon officials have said Israel’s interest in the Strategic Defense Initiative focused in great part on defenses against short-range ballistic missiles, prompted by the continuing influx of Soviet-made weapons into neighboring Syria.
