Pablo Arraya of Peru produced the first upset of the $615,000 Shearson Lehman Tournament of Champions at Forest Hills, N.Y., Monday when he defeated No. 11-seeded Henrik Sundstrom of Sweden, 7-6, 0-6, 7-6.
No. 13-seeded Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia was the second seeded player to fall, losing to Francisco Maciel of Mexico, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6.
No. 5-seeded Kevin Curren, however, had no trouble defeating Brian Teacher, 6-3, 6-2.
Arraya and Sundstrom struggled for 2 hours 42 minutes in swirling winds at the West Side Tennis Club before Arraya won the decisive tiebreaker, 7-2.
“Today, when you hit a lob, you wondered if it was going to go in or hit you in the head (because of the wind),” Arraya said. “Using a slice was the best way to keep the ball in play under these conditions.”
The top seeded players in the tournament--No. 1 Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, No. 2 Boris Becker of West Germany, No. 3 Joakim Nystrom of Sweden and No. 4 Yannick Noah of France--are scheduled to play opening-round matches today.
In a $150,000 Virginia Slims tournament at Houston, Wendy White upset No. 6-seeded Anne White, 7-5, 7-5, in first-round action, while No. 3 Zina Garrison and No. 5 Wendy Turnbull advanced.
Garrison won 10 straight games en route to a 7-5, 6-0, victory over Elizabeth Smylie. Turnbull defeated Molly Van Nostrand, 6-4, 6-1. Also, No. 7 Kate Gompert defeated Carolyn Kuhlman of USC, 6-3, 6-0.
No. 4-seeded Kathy Jordan withdrew due to a recurring shoulder injury.
