National League Roundup : Reds Lose Ninth Straight on Horner’s Homer in 11th

Bob Horner’s two-run homer in the 11th inning Monday night lifted the visiting Atlanta Braves to a 4-3 victory over Cincinnati and handed the reeling Reds their ninth straight loss.

The losing streak is the Reds’ longest since they lost nine in a row between June 27-July 6, 1982. The Reds have lost 13 of their last 14 games and have not won at Riverfront Stadium since April 7, Opening Day, a string of 11 games.

Paul Assenmacher (1-0) pitched two innings in relief to earn his first major league victory, with Gene Garber getting the final out for his second save. Ted Power (0-3) took the loss.

Dale Murphy led off the 11th with a double to left-center field and Horner followed by slamming a 2-1 Power offering over the left-center field fence for his fourth homer of the season.

Montreal 6, Philadelphia 4--Pinch-hitter Mike Fitzgerald’s squeeze bunt in the eighth inning scored Tim Wallach to break a 4-4 tie at Philadelphia as the Expos won their third straight game.

Wallach opened the inning with a single to left and went to third on Vance Law’s single. Dave Rucker relieved Kent Tekulve (0-1) and got pinch-hitter Jason Thompson on a popup. Then Fitzgerald, batting for winning pitcher Dan Schatzeder, laid down his bunt.

Schatzeder (1-0) pitched one hitless inning of relief. Jeff Reardon got his third save.
