A van stolen by illegal aliens was struck by an Amtrak train at Camp Pendelton Tuesday, but no one was injured, the U.S. Border Patrol reported. The van driver and 17 aliens were attempting to evade the traffic checkpoint on Interstate 5 when they drove without permission onto private roads at the base, Border Patrol spokesman Ed Pyeatt said. The van got stuck on the railroad tracks and its occupants fled the vehicle before a southbound train struck and demolished it about 12:30 p.m., he said. Santa Fe Railroad police said the train was delayed about 12 minutes and no one was injured. The aliens were taken into custody.
