The San Diego County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday endorsed an ordinance requiring waste hauling companies to carry $1 million in general liability insurance. The board’s action actually clarified the ordinance, which some haulers had interpreted as meaning they were only required to have $1 million vehicle liability insurance.
According to county officials, only two of the 24 companies licensed to haul waste in the county do not meet the general liability insurance requirements.
Supervisors said the insurance requirement is necessary to protect the public from spills of toxic materials carried in the trucks and other negligent acts not associated with the operation of the disposal trucks.
