KYOTO, Japan — Prince Charles and Princess Diana arrived in Japan today, and after a quiet airport welcome were whisked off in a white Rolls-Royce to begin a five-day visit in the ancient capital city of Kyoto.
The British royal couple were greeted at Osaka airport by Emperor Hirohito’s grandson, Prince Hiro, who recently ended two years of study at Oxford, and other dignitaries.
The arrival was telecast live to millions of curious Japanese, who have been hit with intense “Diana fever” in anticipation of the visit.
The couple came to Japan after a visit to Vancouver, British Columbia, where Diana fainted while touring a pavilion at Expo 86. Speculation that the 24-year-old princess is pregnant was denied by the royal couple’s press secretary.
