Prep Baseball Roundup : Mounce Gets Five Hits to Lead Mater Dei, 12-6

John Mounce went 5 for 5 and knocked in two runs Wednesday to lead Mater Dei High School to a 12-6 Angelus League baseball victory over Pius X at Mater Dei. Mounce, who will play basketball at Azusa Pacific next year, has hit safely in his last 10 at-bats.

Mater Dei, which is in fourth place and out of the running for a playoff spot, came from behind against the last-place Warriors (0-12-1, 1-13-1). Pius took a 4-0 lead after one inning, but the Monarchs (7-7, 13-9) scored six runs in the second inning. The Warriors tied the score, 6-6, with two runs in the third but Mater Dei scored three in its half of the third to take the lead for good. Mike Kelly was 2 for 4 with two runs batted in and Jeff Gibson was 2 for 3 with three RBIs for the Monarchs.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 10, Brea-Olinda 1--Robert Navarrette went the distance as the Tigers supplied him with three runs in the first inning and seven in the second. Brett Gregory got things started with a leadoff triple in the first inning and went 3 for 5. Dennis Burbank added three hits for Valencia (9-5, 12-8) and Andy Ruscitto and Mike Edwards contributed two each.

Anaheim 8, Magnolia 2--Aaron Jara hit a two-run home run to spark Anaheim’s five-run first inning as the Colonists remained in contention for a playoff spot with the upset in Glover Stadium. Mike Kelly was 4 for 4 and Rudy Gonzales 2 for 4 for Anaheim, which moved into a four-way tie third place with one game remaining.

Anthony Martinez (4-1) went the distance for Anaheim (5-9, 8-15), allowing five hits. The Colonists play Valencia on Friday. Magnolia meets Savanna Friday with a possible playoff berth at stake.

Western 3, Savanna 2--Scott Pawloski’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh scored David Tellers with the winning run as the Pioneers edged the Rebels at Brookhurst Park. Tellers started the winning rally with a one-out double to right-center, then went to third on a wild pitch to set up Pawloski’s game-winning hit.

Savanna tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the seventh when Rob DeYoung got a pinch-hit single, was sacrificed to second, and scored on an infield single.
