Thousands Detained During Peru Curfew

LIMA, Peru — The Peruvian military, battling a surge of urban guerrilla violence, has rounded up 38,111 people and shot and killed four people in the last three months for curfew violations in Lima.
War Minister Jorge Flores Torres said in an interview published Thursday in the newspaper El Nacional that soldiers detained the people for violating the 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. curfew.
He said the “immense majority” have been freed but did not specify how many remained under arrest. He did not identify the citizens killed during curfew hours.
President Alan Garcia imposed the curfew last February.
