A 21-year-old woman suffered burns and cuts Friday when she was forced to jump out of a second-story window to escape a fire in her apartment, authorities said.
Kelly Dastrup was showering shortly before 10 a.m. when her bathroom filled with smoke, according to fire officials. She leaped from the bathroom window and was caught by Mike Dukette, who was working on a nearby construction project and responded to her calls for help.
Dastrup was treated by paramedics at the scene for second-degree burns on her hands and cuts on her feet.
Firemen said the blaze, which caused an estimated $35,000 damage, was apparently started by a smoldering cigarette.
