Tennis Roundup : Jaite Upsets Becker, and Vilas Ousts Nystrom

Martin Jaite stunned second-seeded Boris Becker of West Germany, 6-2, 7-6, at Forest Hills, N.Y., Friday, and Guillermo Vilas completed a banner day for Argentina when he upset third-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
As a result, the 33-year-old Vilas will play his 21-year-old former ballboy today in the semifinals of the $615,000 Shearson Lehman Tournament of Champions at the West Side Tennis Club.
Top-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia defeated seventh-seeded Thierry Tulasne of France, 6-4, 6-2, and will meet fourth-seeded Yannick Noah of France, who beat Pablo Arraya of Peru, 6-3, 6-2.
Second-seeded Kathy Rinaldi, two points from defeat in the second set, battled back to reach the semifinals of a $150,000 Virginia Slims tournament at Houston with a 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory over fifth-seeded Wendy Turnbull. Third-seeded Zina Garrison, however, was upset by Pam Casale, 7-6, 6-3.
At Tokyo, Stefan Edberg of Sweden and Scott Davis reached the men’s semifinals of the $200,000 Gunze World tournament, and Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina and Bonnie Gadusek gained the women’s semifinals.
Edberg defeated Peter Lundgren of Sweden, 6-3, 7-6, and Davis downed Tim Mayote, 6-3, 6-4. Sabatini outlasted Stephanie Rehe, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4, and Gadusek beat Etsuko Inoue of Japan, 6-4, 6-4.
