San Diego Prep Baseball Roundup : Fallbrook’s Rally in 6th Overtakes Poway, 10-9

Fallbrook High School scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Poway, 10-9, Friday in a Palomar League baseball game.

Jason Rusk and Jeff Ritchie had RBI singles to bring Fallbrook within a run at 9-8, and Ty Barksdale’s single scored Rusk and Ritchie, giving Fallbrook the lead and the game.

During the first five innings, Poway batters connected for four home runs in Fallbrook’s small park to take the lead. Mike Skaggs hit a three-run homer, Bob Tremble hit a two-run homer, and Joe Bellezzo and Dominick Johnson each hit solo shots to chase starter Mark Ringcamp in the fifth.

John Lane (2-1) pitched 1 innings for the victory. Joe Comer pitched the seventh and earned a save. Comer also had two hits with a two-run home run in the third. No. 6-ranked Fallbrook is 5-3 in the league and 17-4 overall. Poway, ranked ninth, is 4-6 and 11-9.

In other Palomar League action:

Vista 3, Orange Glen 2--Vista scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings for the come-from-behind home victory. Vista improved to 3-6 and 10-9. Orange Glen evened its league record at 4-4 and is 12-8 overall.

CITY EASTERN LEAGUE

Mira Mesa 3, Morse 2--Mira Mesa scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Morse, knocking the Tigers out of a first-place tie with Point Loma in the league. Pat Cheek hit a one-out single to drive in Mark Robert with the game-winning run. Robert had singled home the tying run. Morse (4-3, 13-11) had scored a run in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie. Mira Mesa is 4-3 and 12-13.

Patrick Henry 8, Madison 5--Patrick Henry (2-4-1, 11-7-1) led the entire way at Madison (2-5, 8-10). Steve Plein went 2 for 4 with a two-run home run in the fifth and scored two runs.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Mount Miguel 3, Grossmont 2--Jason Stewart hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie as Mount Miguel (5-5-1, 10-9-1) beat Grossmont (6-6, 10-11).

Valhalla 6, Monte Vista 5--Valhalla (10-1-1) came back from a 5-2 deficit after four innings to beat Monte Vista (2-10, 6-14) on an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.

Granite Hills 6, El Cajon 3--Dan Nerat hit a two-run home run and singled home another run as Granite Hills (7-4, 11-8) won at El Cajon (1-11, 1-14). Donnie Carroll added a solo home run for the Eagles.

AVOCADO LEAGUE

Carlsbad 6, El Camino 3--Bill Schlinger pitched five innings for the victory at El Camino. Mike Knudsen went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs, and Paul Bonoguara scored two runs on a single and a triple. Carlsbad is 6-3 and 10-10. El Camino remains winless in the league at 0-8 and is 2-16 overall.

Ramona 7, San Pasqual 2--John Schmutz had two home runs and three RBIs to lead host Ramona (5-3, 12-6) past San Pasqual (4-5, 9-9-1). David Rowe was 3 for 3, and Tim Ellis pitched a complete-game six-hitter for the winning Bulldogs.

San Marcos 20, Oceanside 7--No. 10-ranked San Marcos scored seven runs in the bottom of the third inning and cruised to the victory at home. San Marcos stayed on top of the Avocado League at 7-2, 12-7. Oceanside fell to 4-5 and 9-11.

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

Hoover 11, Christian 8--Jeff Shepherd had four hits as Hoover (8-4, 11-9) moved into first place in the league with the home victory. Sal Ceballos added four RBIs. Hoover scored all of its runs in the third inning. Pitcher Gus Garcia raised his record to 3-1. Christian dropped to 4-8 and 9-11.

Lincoln 8, San Diego 5--Anthony Johnson won the game after entering the game in the fifth inning in relief, and he went 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored. Byron Johnson went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Lincoln (7-5, 15-9) stayed a game behind Hoover in the league. San Diego is close at 7-5-1 and 11-11-1.

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

Mission Bay 12, Kearny 3--No. 5-ranked Mission Bay (10-2, 17-5) cushioned its league lead with the victory. Sean Rees and Scott Vonderlieth both had four RBIs, and Chris Wukovits went 3 for 5 with four runs scored. Rusty Filter pitched five innings to raise his record to 7-1. Kearny (6-6, 8-12) had an early 3-1 lead, but Mission Bay scored three runs in the third inning and four in both the fourth and fifth to secure the victory.

University City 8, La Jolla 2--Eric Root went the distance for University City as it raised its record to 5-7 and 8-12. La Jolla fell to 5-7 and 7-14.

University 12, Clairemont 2--Visiting University scored in every inning but the second. Tom Stilinovich went the distance for the victory. John Tuttle hit a solo home run in the second inning.

NONLEAGUE

Mount Carmel 1, Escondido 0--Miah Bradbury’s double scored Rich Hooper, who had walked and stolen second, with the game’s only run in the bottom of the first. Tom Cheek pitched a complete game to raise his record to 6-2. No. 2-ranked Mount Carmel is 19-4; Escondido, 11-11.
