Scholarships Seen as Discriminatory
In my 60 years, I have observed many instances of racial discrimination in the Southern California area.
But I have never seen such a blatantly open example of racial bias as was reported in your story, “$300 Scholarships Offered to Latino Compton Students,” (Southeast / Long Beach sections, May 4).
I doubt if anyone could imagine the hue and cry that would go up if an Anglo scholarship foundation offered scholarships only to Anglo students.
It would be of interest to hear from the Juan Candia Memorial Scholarship Foundation as to why these scholarships are denied equally worthy black students in this school district and in the Catholic school districts in the same general areas.
