Arizona Lawmakers Reject King Holiday

PHOENIX — Arizona lawmakers ran “against the tide of history” by rejecting a proposed state holiday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. according to the bill’s sponsor.
The state House defeated the measure Friday by one vote, a day after the bill’s sponsor, Minority Leader Art Hamilton, surprised House Republican leaders by winning a tentative vote on the bill.
The bill would have set aside the third Monday in January to honor the slain civil rights leader and combined the George Washington and Abraham Lincoln holidays in February into a Presidents’ Day.
