LOS BANOS, Calif. — A van carrying home 13 San Diego State University athletes from a rowing meet in Sacramento was traveling an estimated 85 m.p.h. when it rolled off Interstate 5, killing three passengers, officials said today.
The driver, Joseph Farrage, 19, apparently lost control when a tire blew out Sunday at 8:20 p.m. as the van was heading south on the freeway about 13 miles northwest of Los Banos, California Highway Patrol spokesman Doyne Cates said. The van rolled several times and caught fire, ejecting the three men who were killed and injuring the other 10 occupants. Seven were admitted to local hospitals and were described as in fair condition.
