Thousands of protesters shouting “Yankees go home!” marched on the U.S. air base at Torrejon near Madrid to demand the withdrawal of American forces from Spain. Police said about 10,000 people took part; organizers put the figure at 125,000. Organizers said the march marked the start of a drive to press for the dismantling of the three U.S. air bases, one U.S. naval base and a string of communications facilities that Spain leases to the United States.
