Don Newcombe, former National League Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Award winner, who has admitted to having had an alcohol problem, says the 1955 World Series champion Brooklyn Dodgers had a number of players who drank too much.
“On the 1955 Dodgers, I bet there were at least 10 of us who were abusers of alcohol on that championship team,” Newcombe said in Toronto.
“I had two of them (alcoholic abusers) . . . who told me one day, ‘Newk, if you’re an alcoholic, what am I?’ ”
He declined to disclose names.
Newcombe said that about five of his former teammates seldom drank, among them the late Jackie Robinson and Gil Hodges.
