Longest-Serving Legislator Dies

BARNWELL, S.C. — Solomon Blatt, who had held a seat in the South Carolina House since 1933, making him the country’s longest-serving state legislator, died Wednesday at 91.
Blatt, the South Carolina Speaker emeritus, had been recognized by the Council of State Governments as the country’s longest-serving state legislator. He had indicated that he would seek reelection this year.
He had served as House Speaker from 1937 to 1947 and from 1951 to 1973.
