Dietz Named WAC Coach of Year

DENVER — San Diego State Coach Jim Dietz was named the Western Athletic Conference’s baseball coach of the year Thursday and three Aztec players were named to the All-WAC team.
Brigham Young outfielder Gary Cooper was named the conference’s baseball player of the year. Dietz coached San Diego State to 15 consecutive victories, the Western Division title and the championship of the WAC tournament.
The three Aztec all-stars are designated hitter Nick Riesgo and pitchers Mike Erb and Matt Harr.
Others named to the all-WAC team are first baseman Mike Mulvaney of Wyoming, second basemen David Willes of Brigham Young and Tod Crosby of Hawaii, shortstop Glen Russell of New Mexico, third baseman Chris Schultis of Utah, outfielders Steve Sparks of New Mexico and Eric Pharris of Air Force, catchers Phil Williams of Hawaii and Lance Wilson of Wyoming, and pitcher Joey Vierra of Hawaii.
