Mayor Dianne Feinstein of San Francisco said that Santa Fe-Southern Pacific Corp. has agreed to lease the city an 11.5-acre site for a downtown baseball stadium.
Feinstein said the site at Seventh and Townsend streets is the most practical location for the 42,000-seat stadium, which will be leased to the city for $1 a year for 66 years.
Terms of the lease and financing for the $36-million stadium are being negotiated, Feinstein said. Final approval rests with the Board of Supervisors and owner Bob Lurie of the Giants.
Construction for the stadium could begin as early as 1987, which might enable it to open in time for the 1990 season.
