Schlegel, Evans Lead Newbury Park to Win

Mark Schlegel drove in three runs and Glenn Evans pitched a complete game to help Newbury Park defeat Torrance, 3-2, in the first round of the Southern Section 4-A baseball playoffs.

Torrance took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on a three-run homer by Chad Schluchter, but Newbury Park rallied in the fourth on a two-run homer by Schlegel. In the fifth, Jeff Smith led off with a walk, Loyd Wood doubled and Schlegel drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly. Wood then scored the winning run on a double by Tim Bohling. Evans improved his record to 7-4, allowing only four hits and striking out four.
