Winged Sprint Cars to Run at Saugus
From Saugus Speedway, the track that created such motor sports oddities as the Ego Challenge and Destruction Football, comes something different. Saugus will stage a 12-lap exhibition race tonight for super-modified cars, 1,400-pound winged sprint cars designed to run on asphalt.
Powered by 488-cubic-inch, alcohol-burning engines that develop close to 750 horsepower, the cars compare to the power of Indy cars--about 250 horsepower more than the modified stock cars that regularly headline Saturday night shows at Saugus. About half a dozen cars will compete.
