Scotland Celebration

I thought your readers might like to know that my hometown of Dumfries, Scotland, is this year celebrating its octocentenary as a Royal Burgh, having been granted a king’s charter in 1186. There are many events planned, centered around Good Neighbors Week in June.

Robert the Bruce killed John (the Red) Comyn there to claim the leadership of Scotland. Robert Burns the poet spent his last years there and is buried there. J. M. Barrie, who wrote “Peter Pan,” was educated at Dumfries Academy. John Paul Jones, called by some the founder of the U.S. Navy, was born 11 miles away at Arbigland. The town has several hotels, most reasonably priced.
