It was a winning first weekend for “Top Gun,” the high-tech romantic drama starring Tom Cruise as a brash young jet fighter pilot. Box-office grosses exceeded $8.1 million, excluding Washington, D.C., where the picture hasn’t yet opened, said a Paramount Pictures spokeswoman.
“Short Circuit,” Tri-Star’s high-tech comedy, also claimed healthy figures over the weekend. Grosses after two weeks are now in excess of $11 million.
Second-week grosses for Paramount’s high school love story, “Fire With Fire,” brought that film’s total to $3.3 million, while Cannon’s high school vigilante movie, “Dangerously Close,” hit the $2-million mark. After three weeks, Columbia’s “Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling” has had ticket sales in excess of $12.7 million. During that same period, Paramount’s “Blue City” has managed only $5.9 million.
