A 43-year-old San Diego man, believed to have been armed and apparently despondent over breaking up with his woman companion of several years, barricaded himself inside his apartment for almost six hours before surrendering to police, a San Diego police spokesman said.
Charles Perry held the woman’s 19-year-old son hostage at the apartment in the 1800 block of Jade Court, police said. Perry freed him soon after a San Diego police hostage team arrived, but refused to come out himself, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
A SWAT unit waited outside the apartment for four hours. Perry, who claimed to have a shotgun, surrendered when a police negotiator promised that he would not be hurt.
Perry is being held at the County Jail downtown on suspicion of kidnaping and false imprisonment in lieu of $50,000 bail.
