O’Hare Flights Delayed by New Procedures

CHICAGO — Some incoming flights were delayed briefly Tuesday at O’Hare International Airport, where new takeoff and landing procedures have been ordered following the near-collision of two passenger jetliners.
Only one of two intersecting runways at the airport could be used at one time under modified procedures of the Federal Aviation Administration, a spokeswoman said.
The FAA ordered the modifications after the near-crash Saturday of a USAir DC-9 and an American Airlines 727, with a total of 219 people aboard. The incident was attributed to an apparent error by a tower controller who had cleared both for takeoff.
