Whittier : College Widens Smoke Ban
In an attempt to create a healthier learning environment, Rio Hondo College trustees have banned smoking in most buildings at the campus near Whittier. The request for a no-smoking policy was initiated by the Academic Senate, a faculty group. It was supported by classified employee and student organizations.
The action prohibits smoking in any classroom, laboratory, studio or the library. Smoking had been banned in the library and most labs, but the new policy has been extended to include classrooms and art studios. College President Herbert Sussman said the Board of Trustees passed the ban after hearing complaints about smoking in classrooms. “It is a terrible habit that poses a significant health risk as well as safety risk,” he said.
