Bird Named Freeway Most Valuable Player

Sonora High School pitcher David Bird, who was 12-0 and struck out 132, was named Most Valuable Player of the Freeway League in a vote of the league’s coaches.
League champion Sonora dominated the coaches’ selections with six players named to the first team. The coaches’ teams:
First Team: Pitchers--Mike Greer (Troy) and Bryan Needham (Sonora); Catchers--Ron Lesperance (Sonora) and John Mele (Fullerton); Infielders--Jeff Bailey (Fullerton), Mitch Kaylor (Sonora), Rob Stuart (Sonora) and Mike Case (Troy); Outfielders--David St. Clair (Troy), Scott Einhorn (Sonora) and T.J. Richards (Fullerton); Utility--Paul Bunch (Buena Park) and David Wackerman (Sunny Hills).
Second Team: Pitchers--Chris Robinson (Troy), and Trevor Painton (Sunny Hills); Infielders--Scott Rajcic (Sonora), Steve Pearson (Fullerton), Rob Tash (Sunny Hills), and Mike Segovia (La Habra); Outfielders--Jay Zeller (Sonora), Curt Daggett (Fullerton) and Bryan Miller (Sonora).
