Three men held up a jewelry store in the sprawling Plaza Bonita shopping center Thursday and escaped with an undetermined amount of merchandise.
According to National City police, the three, believed to have been armed with pistols, smashed display cases in Zales jewelers shortly before 11 a.m. and dashed off with the loot.
Shopping center customers chased the bandits to the parking lot, then followed their car to a Chula Vista motel. National City and Chula Vista police surrounded the motel and the Chula Vista SWAT team conducted a room-by-room search, but the three men were not found. The car they used had been stolen in Los Angeles.
