SAN DIEGO — Kirk Stakle of Mount Carmel High School set a San Diego Section record Thursday with a time of 56.42 in the 100-yard breaststroke at the section preliminaries at Mount Carmel. The record time automatically qualified Stakle for All-American honors.
“In warm-ups, my arms felt pretty good but my legs didn’t feel all that good,” he said. “But once I got in the pool, everything seemed to click. . .”
Stakle also won the 200 individual medley (1:54.84) to qualify for Saturday’s 1 p.m. finals at Mount Carmel. He said he will concentrate on breaking the 200 individual medley record of 1:52.89 set by Mount Carmel’s Will Norris in 1970.
