A Little Rhody Rhymin’
As a former Rhode Islander, I read Charles Hillinger’s May 4 article “Indian History Leaves Prints in Rhode Island Names” with much amusement.
(I) Have been in Quonochontaug,
Been on the Wampanoaug Trail.
Had a summer house at Matunuck,
Lived close to Apponaug.
Played golf at Meshanicut and Misquamicut,
Went to Narragansett Downs.
Frequented Pascoag,
Had friends in Chepachet,
And certainly went to Pawtucket (although I am not a
Rhode Island Red Head from there, as the song goes),
And my French friends were from Woonsocket.
Went to the reservoir at Scituate, and the ponds at
Watchaug (got some quahogs there), and Ninigret.
Used Occapawtuxet Road (to get to the Airport) often
(name is now changed to Airport Road),
And of course ate many a Johnny Cake.
It is a wonderful state to be from.
