ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Somali President Mohamed Siad Barre was flown to Saudi Arabia on Saturday for medical treatment after a car accident, the state-run news agency of the emirate of Qatar reported.
State-run Somali radio said in a report monitored in Nairobi, Kenya, that Barre was hurt Friday in a car accident 30 miles outside the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
“His condition is satisfactory,” the station said.
It said the accident occurred in heavy rain and that an unspecified number of “government leaders” were also hurt.
The Qatari news agency, monitored in Abu Dhabi, said three people, whom it did not identify, were killed when Barre’s car collided with another vehicle near the capital.
