Officials of the federal Environmental Protection Agency will discuss their plans for cleaning up the Operating Industries Inc. landfill in Monterey Park at a meeting with residents at 7 tonight at Schurr High School in Montebello. The landfill was recently placed on the federal Superfund cleanup list. Keith Takata, who directs Superfund cleanup programs at the EPA regional office in San Francisco, said the agency is spending $1 million to buttress slopes and up to $1 million to improve the gas and leachate collection system and other interim measures, pending a long-term study that will lead to a complete clean up plan.
