Cuba pledged a supplemental 40,000 tons of oil to Nicaragua in answer to a plea for help in meeting the Central American nation’s petroleum needs through the end of the year, the Sandinista government said. The increase raises Cuba’s total oil contribution to 100,000 tons for 1987. “We have been holding intense meetings to try to cover our petroleum deficit, and the first country to respond is Cuba,” Energy Minister Emilio Rappaccioli said. In an effort to cut consumption, prices of gasoline and diesel fuel have been doubled.
