CURATOR SEES ‘DYNAMIC’ INSTITUTE ALUMNI SHOW

Works by 57 California Institute of the Arts alumni, including those based in New York and Los Angeles, are scheduled to be presented Jan. 22 to March 20 at the Newport Harbor Art Museum, museum officials said Wednesday.

The survey, “CalArts: Skeptical Belief(s),” was organized by the University of Chicago’s Renaissance Society gallery, where the show ran May 6-June 27.

The Newport Harbor run, which will be a greatly expanded version of works by former students of the Valencia arts institute, will be the only other showing in the country, said Paul Schimmel, the museum’s chief curator.

“It’s a dynamic collection, a whole generation of younger artists whose concerns reflect social and political concerns as well as pure aesthetics,” Schimmel said of the survey of artists who are in their late 20s and 30s.

Among the artists are David Salle and Eric Fischl, now based in New York, and Mike Kelly and Jill Giegerich of Los Angeles.

Schimmel said his museum and the Renaissance Society’s director, Susanne Ghez, will collaborate on a catalogue for the Newport Harbor showing, which will present 120 “on the wall” works and 20 video and performance art creations.

The Chicago showing was underwritten by various sources, including a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Schimmel said funds for the Newport Harbor run are being sought.
