Arcadia : Rail Study Opposed
Arcadia will not participate in a study of the feasibility of shipping trash by rail from the San Gabriel Valley to outlying deserts.
The City Council Tuesday declined to reconsider an earlier vote against participating in the $135,000 study that will be conducted for a task force of 28 San Gabriel Valley cities. Arcadia is the first city in the task force to oppose the study. So far, 23 cities have agreed to contribute to the study, pledging up to $5,000 apiece. Four others have yet to vote.
Council members said shipping trash to the desert would prove too costly. Even without Arcadia’s participation, however, the task force has enough money to fund the study because of a $10,000 contribution from Supervisor Pete Schabarum.
