The Houston county prosecutor was sentenced to three days in jail after being held in contempt of court for refusing to press a burglary case. Harris County Dist. Atty. John B. Holmes refused to prosecute the case as a challenge to a state law he says will prohibit visiting judges from helping ease the workload of full-time judges. He was jailed without bond but was freed after his office went to the Court of Criminal Appeals, which set bond at $100 and scheduled a Sept. 17 hearing, spokesman John Jasuta said. The challenge began Tuesday, the day a new government code went into effect.
