Purdue King Gets Through a Rough Race to Win $65,500 Balboa Stakes at Del Mar

DEL MAR — Purdue King was bumped in the initial strides and, while battling for command in the final sixteenth, brushed with Accomplish Ridge, but hung on to win by a nose Wednesday in the $65,500 Grade III Balboa Stakes at Del Mar.
Ridden by Chris McCarron, Purdue King prevailed over Accomplish Ridge, with Eddie Delahoussaye aboard. Accomplish Ridge was three-quarters of a length in front of Mixed Pleasure, ridden by Alex Solis, in a field of eight.
Purdue King covered seven furlongs in 1:23 1/5 and earned $38,500 for the victory in the race for 2-year-olds.
Purdue King paid $4.40, $3 and $2.40; Accomplish Ridge returned $3.40 and $2.60, while Mixed Pleasure paid $3.20 to show.
